This set of FOUR is an absolute SCORE!!!! I mean… WOW!!! Folks, this is a FABULOUS set of four Windsor Hitchcock side or dining chairs model number 112G23 composed of marvelous maple frames with beautiful birdcage spindle style backs, stunning shield shaped seats with a lovely hand carved groove detail surrounding the shape of the seat, spectacular splayed faux bamboo turned legs and horizontal front stretchers, and straight, horizontal cylindrical side and back stretchers. Superb construction, versatility, AND talk about sturdy! They are stamped with the recognizable L. Hitchcock gold stenciled signature with reversed N’s and they bear a classic Early American design aesthetic VERY popular to their circa! These chairs were often called “fancy chairs” and they were immensely popular in the early 1820’s and 30’s… and their timeless presence reins significant still today! They would be WONDERFUL surrounding a kitchen table or breakfast nook, game table, or utilized as extra seating in ANY room! There’s nothing quite as nice as an “anywhere chair” … unless of course… there are FOUR of them!!
In 1818, Lambert Hitchcock established a factory in Barkhamsted, Connecticut, a town that would later be renamed to Hitchcocksville in his honor. That town is now known as Riverton but in 1825, the factory was booming. The company was primarily known for “fancy chairs” with stenciled signatures on the back seat rail known for the reversed N’s. Lambert moved production to Unionville in 1844 before his death in 1852, and the original factory eventually ceased chair production in 1864. The business suffered financial struggles and went into receivership in 1932 and was discovered by John Terrant Kenney in 1946. He revived the company into Hitchcock Chair Co. in the original location where they produced high quality reproductions until it closed its doors in 2006. Since 2010, the brand has been under ownership of Gary Hath and Rick Swenson who continue to manufacture chairs in Connecticut and continues to trade as The Hitchcock Chair Co., LTD. located in Riverton, Conn.
Quality manufacturer, iconic reputation, and a classic style with a timeless presence you are sure to love for years to come! This set of 4 Windsor Hitchcock maple side or dining chairs checks ALL the boxes!!! What are you waiting for? Make them YOURS!!!!
