An important and finely executed Japanese two-panel folding byōbu screen crafted in the Nihonga tradition, depicting a traveler’s waystation set within a mist-laden mountain landscape. Painted by Tamaya Shunki, also known as Shunki Tamaya (Japanese 1880-1948). Born in Gifu Prefecture his life’s work embodies the rich traditions of Nihonga. Shunki's journey as an artist was shaped by rigorous training under esteemed masters – Kono Bairei, Nomura Bunkyo, and Mori Kansai – ultimately establishing him as a respected professor at the Kyoto School of Fine Arts. Shunki’s work is inextricably linked to the legacy of the Kanō school, a movement dedicated to reviving and adapting classical Chinese painting techniques in Japan. The large composition screen measures over 8.5 feet wide and unfolds horizontally, guiding the eye through a terrain of softly rising hills, drifting clouds, and a secluded roadside shelter perched along the slope. The mountainside shelter offering refuge to travelers and their pack animals. The piece is executed in ink and natural color pigments on paper. The painting employs mineral pigments (iwa-enogu) and delicate ink washes on paper, creating a dramatic palette of muted celadon greens, warm ochres, and soft earthen tones. Mist drifts across the composition, partially veiling the terrain and reinforcing a sense of depth, atmosphere, and quiet transience. The painted landscape is reminiscent of the Gouhua painter Zhang Daqian (Chinese 1899-1983) and his later impressionistic splashed color paintings. Mounted in a black lacquered wood frame with a traditional silk brocade border. The screen is signed with a seal in the lower right Tamaya Shunki 玉舎春輝1880-1948. Rare and exceptional example of Nihonga painting from an estate in San Francisco, CA.
