A rare and historically significant 84 Zolotnik silver napkin ring from the late 19th century. This piece is a masterclass in Niello—the ancient art of fusing a dark metallic alloy into engraved silver to create high-contrast, dramatic imagery.
The central motif features a finely detailed Russian architectural landscape (likely a village or kremlin scene), framed by intricate floral tendrils. The piece is clearly struck with the "84" Imperial silver standard and the Cyrillic maker’s mark "ГН" for Gustav Nykanen, a noted St. Petersburg silversmith active circa 1870–1890.

The Niello work is remarkably well-preserved—dark, crisp, and 100% intact with no significant losses to the black alloy. The silver retains its original unpolished patina, which highlights the depth of the hand-engraving. There are no major dents, deep gouges, or structural repairs. Minor surface micro-scratches are present as expected for a piece of this age, adding to its authentic character. less
