André Derain was a French painter and one of the founders of Fauvism, a movement known for its bold, non-naturalistic color and expressive brushwork. Working alongside artists like Henri Matisse, Derain helped redefine early 20th-century painting by prioritizing color over realism. His vivid landscapes—such as his views of London—capture light and atmosphere through striking, unexpected palettes. Later in his career, he moved toward a more classical style, but his Fauvist period remains his most influential and celebrated contribution to modern art.
His works are currently at:
Museum of Modern Art (New York) – Holds several important Fauvist paintings, including London scenes and landscapes
Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) – Houses portraits and later works from his more classical period
Tate Modern (London) – Notably includes The Pool of London from his famous Thames series
Musée d'Orsay & Centre Pompidou (Paris) – Key holdings of Fauvist and early modern works
Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum (Madrid) – Holds works like Waterloo Bridge
National Gallery of Art – Includes major Fauvist landscapes like Mountains at Collioure
