Rare slim-profile signed stoneware table lamp designed by Gunnar
Nylund (1904-1997) for Rörstrand, Sweden, circa 1950s-1960s.
Authenticated by the incised Nylund signature to the base.
The hand-thrown cylindrical body features Nylund's distinctive
two-tone flambé-style glaze: a rich caramel and honey ochre upper
section flowing into a deep chocolate brown ribbed foot. The
vertical incised ribs running the full height of the form
catch light beautifully and reveal the hand-worked surface
characteristic of Nylund's mature Rörstrand period.
Gunnar Nylund served as Artistic Director at Rörstrand from
1931 to 1955-59, during which he produced the manufacturer's
most collected mid-century output. His works are held in the
Nationalmuseum Stockholm, Röhsska Museum Gothenburg, the Danish
Museum of Art & Design, and the Rörstrand Museum in Lidköping.
The slim silhouette (3.15" diameter to 10.63" height ratio) is
one of the scarcer Nylund lamp profiles - most documented
examples are bulbous or gourd-shaped.
