Founded in 1979 by industrial arts teacher Wally Kohler in a Tucson carport, the craft evolved through the decades in New Mexico and continues today under the stewardship of Cole Bates. The piece represents a rigorous commitment to material integrity, centered around a shade of 100% solid copper milled in the Southwest. Each shade undergoes a 22-step production process where the reticulated patterns are hand-punched or plasma-cut to create a dramatic, dappled light effect. To preserve the rich, hand-applied patina, the copper is sealed with a high-durability clear lacquer originally engineered for luxury automobiles.

The base is anchored by handpicked Velvet Mesquite harvested annually from the Sonoran Desert. While its rugged, weathered texture is often mistaken for driftwood, the wood is selected for the extreme density and complex burl patterns forged by the harsh desert environment. Achieving its satin-smooth finish requires 17 separate refinement stages, including meticulous hand-sanding and multiple applications of Danish oil.
