Crafted in Belgium circa 1880, the oil on canvas composition depicts a grazing goat in a tranquil pastoral landscape. The artwork is signed lower left “Schouten” and is set in its original richly carved giltwood frame, embellished with foliate and beaded motifs and retaining the engraved nameplate “P.H. This work is attributed to Paul Henry Schouten (Belgian, 1860–1922), a listed artist in Benezit, known for his finely observed depictions of livestock and pastoral subjects.
