Michelangelo Cerquozzi (Rome 1602 - 1660) circle
Battle Scene
Oil on canvas
38 x 48 cm.
Framed 55 x 66 cm.
The compositional and stylistic characteristics of our delightful battle, such as its dramatic intensity and dynamic composition, suggest a close relationship with the work of Michelangelo Cerquozzi (Rome 1602 - 1660), known as "Michelangelo of Battles" for his mastery of this genre and one of the most celebrated exponents of Roman Baroque painting.
Our work, in particular, captures the moment following a battle, with the knights about to assess the immediate aftermath of the battle.
The landscape in the background is beautifully detailed, with a city and an ancient hilltop fortress. Although difficult to recognize, it offers a realistic view of the suburban areas of the Eternal City.
Scenes of this type were intended for seventeenth- and eighteenth-century collections, not so much to celebrate grand war themes, but to decorate noble and bourgeois homes. Battle paintings were particularly popular in the Baroque era and were often inspired by military events, highly topical in an era of wars and armies continually encroaching on Italian soil.
The style evident in the canvas is a unique fusion of Italian tradition and the influence of Northern European painters in Rome. This blend is a distinctive feature of Cerquozzi's oeuvre, which successfully combined the analytical attention to detail typical of the Flemish school with the narrative layout and chromatic sensitivity of the Roman pictorial tradition.
The work is in good condition, with a healthy paint layer and some restoration work.
