The Silent Guardian" is a rare and evocative example of West African tribal sculpture. Hand-carved from a single block of dense, indigenous hardwood, this Bateba figure originates from the Lobi people of Burkina Faso. Characterized by its sophisticated verticality, the statue features an elegantly elongated neck and a stoic, contemplative facial expression that embodies the Lobi ideal of spiritual strength and poise. The figure is adorned with intricate scarification patterns on the torso—represented by rhythmic triangular and linear incisions—which denote status and protection. Over decades of ritual use, the timber has developed a deep, lustrous ebony patina, beautifully preserved and highlighted by a subtle hand-rubbed wax finish. Now mounted on a minimalist custom iron gallery stand, this 28-inch statue transitions from a sacred household protector to a museum-quality sculptural anchor. It is a perfect focal point for an Architectural Minimalist, Organic Modern, or Primitive Art collection.
As an authentic tribal artifact, "The Silent Guardian" is presented in its Original Antique Condition. It displays a refined "earned character," featuring natural age-related fissures, softened carving edges from handling, and the beautiful irregular texture of 19th-century hand-tooling.
