A striking and highly collectible West German Fat Lava ceramic table lamp dating to the 1960s and 1970s. The urn-shaped body features applied sculptural scroll relief decoration across the upper section, with a dramatically textured volcanic lava glaze surface throughout.
The multi-tone glaze is exceptional — deep brown and black tones overlay a volcanic textured ground with vivid orange bleeding through in characteristic Fat Lava fashion. A ribbed collar separates the body from the stepped pedestal base, itself covered in finer relief texture with the same dramatic glaze treatment.
Fat Lava is the collector term for the bold, heavily textured volcanic-glaze ceramics produced by West German potteries during the 1950s through 1970s, a period now recognized as one of the most creatively fertile in modern ceramic history. Major producers including Bay Keramik, Ruscha, Scheurich and Dumler and Breiden competed to create increasingly dramatic surface effects, combining applied relief decoration with layered glaze techniques that produced results impossible to replicate identically twice. These pieces have developed a passionate international collector following, with serious examples commanding significant prices at auction and in specialist galleries worldwide.
While no maker's mark is present on the unglazed base, the raised scrollwork, mottled brown and orange drip glaze and overall form are strongly indicative of West German Fat Lava production of the 1960s and 1970s, as confirmed by independent appraisal. The lamp has been fitted with an American two-prong cord, consistent with US import and rewiring practices of the period.
Sold as base only. The original pleated shade is included but shows significant age and wear and is best replaced to allow the base to read at its full potential.
