The Bandiagara Pillar is an evocative fragment of West African history, standing 72 inches tall. Hand-carved from a single trunk of indigenous hardwood by the Dogon people, this ladder is a masterclass in primitive sculptural form. It features six rhythmic, hand-hewn "Y" notch rungs that served as the primary architectural staircase for the ancient cliffside granaries of the Bandiagara Escarpment in Mali. This specific artifact is distinguished by its Raw Aged Finish. Unlike our waxed pieces, this ladder has been preserved in its most honest state—highly oxidized with a beautiful, bone-dry texture that displays natural wood "dusting" and loose surface particles. These characteristics are the essential hallmarks of its century-long exposure to the arid Sahelian climate. The deep, jagged fissures and silvered grain give it an incredible "Wabi-Sabi" aesthetic, making it a perfect vertical anchor for Organic Modern, Global Primitive, or Rustic Minimalist gallery walls.
As an authentic tribal artifact, "The Bandiagara Pillar" is presented in its Original Antique Condition. It displays heavy architectural weathering, significant natural wood checking, and a raw, matte oxidation that perfectly captures the unrefined soul of 19th-century African functional art.
