The Cliff Dweller, is a monumental artifact of West African tribal utility, distinguished by its robust, thick-trunk construction. Hand-carved from a single piece of dense, indigenous hardwood by the Dogon people of Mali, this 75.5-inch ladder served as a primary access point for the steep granaries of the Bandiagara Escarpment. Unlike more slender examples, this piece features a heavy, wide profile that showcases the raw power of the timber and the subtractive skill of the artisan. This piece is finished in a sophisticated waxed oxidized grey, which preserves the rugged, weathered texture of the grain while adding a charcoal-toned depth. A standout feature of this specific ladder is the inclusion of its original hand-forged iron mounting brackets, allowing it to be securely displayed as a floating vertical sculpture or a grounded architectural totem. The rhythmic "Y" notch rungs remain deeply defined, casting soft shadows that emphasize its "found object" energy. Standing nearly 6.5 feet tall, it brings a sense of grounded history and architectural gravity to Modern Rustic, Wabi-Sabi, or Global Industrial interiors.
As an authentic tribal artifact, "The Cliff Dweller" is presented in its Original Antique Condition. It displays an exceptional weathered character, featuring natural wood checking, smoothed edges from generations of use, and a deep, multi-layered patina that serves as an immutable record of its 19th-century provenance.
