There’s something almost hypnotic about this vase — the way the milky white opaline glass spirals upward, threaded through with ribbons of soft teal green, culminating in a freely ruffled rim that catches the light like a wave caught mid-curl. It is handblown glass as pure expression.
The tag on this piece reads Nailsea 1788–1883, placing it within the storied window of the Nailsea Crown Glass and Bottle Manufacturers, established near Bristol, England in 1788. The Nailsea glassworks became known for decorating non-flint glass with white dots or lines — a technique that enhanced the appeal of bottle glass at a time when the English crown taxed flint glass heavily. The result was a distinctly folk-art sensibility elevated to something genuinely lovely.
This example displays the characteristic swirling opaline decoration in a cylindrical form with a dramatically ruffled, free-formed rim — a shape consistent with Victorian-era Nailsea production known for ruffled tops and white swirl designs on a contrasting ground. The top-down view reveals the tight, concentric spiral construction, evidence of skilled hand manipulation at the furnace. The base shows the opaque white interior typical of period cased glass technique.
Condition is excellent — no chips, cracks, or repairs noted. Some minor interior patina consistent with age and use.
A note on attribution: The “Nailsea” label is a period reseller tag; Nailsea glass is also used as a generic collector’s term for English glassware featuring pulled or combed white decoration, produced at several British factories including those in Newcastle, Stourbridge, and Sunderland. This piece is consistent with that tradition regardless of exact origin. No
