This striking Grand Tour model of the Temple of Vespasian and Titus captures the enduring majesty of ancient Rome in a beautifully scaled, sculptural form. Cast in thick metal during the mid-19th century, this piece reflects the era’s fascination with classical antiquity, when well-traveled collectors brought home architectural souvenirs as symbols of culture, education, and refinement.
Rising gracefully on a stepped plinth, the model features three elegantly fluted Corinthian columns supporting a richly detailed entablature. The surface retains a wonderfully aged patina, enhancing its timeworn character and lending an authentic, almost archaeological presence. The crisp architectural detailing—from the acanthus capitals to the ornamental frieze demonstrates a level of craftsmanship, making it both a decorative object and a miniature study of classical design. The original Temple of Vespasian and Titus, located in the Roman Forum, was constructed in the late 1st century AD to honor the deified Emperor Vespasian and later his son Titus. Only three columns of the temple remain standing today, forming one of the most iconic and recognizable ruins in Rome—a symbol of imperial power and the enduring legacy of Roman architecture. This model faithfully echoes that surviving fragment, preserving its grandeur in collectible form.
Weighing just over 2 pounds, the piece has a satisfying heft and presence. It measures approximately 9 inches high, 2.25 inches wide, and 2.5 inches deep—ideal for display on a desk, bookshelf, or within a curated cabinet of curiosities. Good antique condition, the top piece above the columns was reattached with glue (there is visible excess). There is also a mold defect toward the base in which there is a hole in the metal approximately 0.50 inch by 0.50 inch. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
A quintessential Grand Tour artifact, this model bridges art, history, and design—perfect for the discerning collector or anyone seeking to bring a touch of classical sophistication into their space.
