Antique American Empire Mahogany and Gold Leaf Ogee Hall Mirror, Circa 1820s–1840s
A handsome and impressively scaled example of American Empire period decorative furniture, this substantial mahogany and gold leaf ogee hall mirror commands attention with the bold architectural presence and rich material combination that defines the Empire style at its most confident and satisfying. At 27 inches wide and 51½ inches tall this is a genuinely imposing mirror — the kind of grand, room-defining object that anchors an entry hall, dining room, or parlour with effortless authority and period authenticity.
The deeply coved ogee moulded frame is veneered in warm, richly figured mahogany and accented throughout with gold leaf trim — a classic and luxurious American Empire combination that speaks to the ambitions of both maker and original patron. The two part mirror composition — the upper and lower glass panels separated by a horizontal gold leaf strip — is a characteristic and elegant feature of the American Empire hall mirror form, its division adding a pleasing architectural rhythm to the overall composition while allowing the generous mirror surface to display with maximum visual impact.
The original mahogany veneer and gold leaf trim survive in fine original condition — a pleasing and authenticating detail that speaks to the piece's careful preservation over nearly two centuries. The mirror glasses are sympathetic replacements in heavy plate glass, presenting cleanly and practically, and the plywood back is a later practical addition. Given the mirror's substantial size and weight a reinforced hanging hook is strongly recommended for safe installation.
A bold, beautiful, and room-defining piece of American Empire decorative art at a very accessible price for its scale and quality.
