Antique English Mahogany Queen Anne Tilt Top Tea Table, Circa 1800–1820s
A graceful and well-proportioned example of English Regency period mahogany furniture in the Queen Anne taste, this elegant tilt top tea table combines the restrained classicism of the turned pedestal form with the distinctive and characterful Queen Anne slipper feet to produce a piece of quiet, enduring appeal. English mahogany tea tables of this period and quality were the indispensable centerpiece of the Georgian and Regency drawing room tea ceremony — objects of both practical utility and considerable social significance — and this example retains all of the understated elegance that defined their original purpose.
The restrained vase form central pedestal is cleanly and confidently turned, rising from a well-proportioned base that fans out into three Queen Anne slipper feet distinguished by a characteristic centre ridge — a refined and period-specific detail that adds both visual interest and regional character to the base composition. The generous three-board circular top, measuring a substantial 30¾ by 31¼ inches, provides ample surface for a full tea service and displays the warm, rich mahogany tones that only genuine period English timber can produce. The tilt top mechanism functions as intended, allowing the table to be tilted upright when not in use — a practical and authentic Georgian detail.
The table has been refinished and presents with honest scratches and gouges to the top surface and wear consistent with its more than two centuries of drawing room service — the battle scars of a well-used and well-loved piece of English domestic furniture.
A charming and versatile piece equally at home as a occasional table, lamp table, or breakfast table in a traditional or transitional interior.
