Historic wooden chair from around 1900 with a turned backrest and an exceptionally low seat. Later version with a light finish. The narrow, tall backrest and the evenly spaced turned sections give the piece a calm, vertical appearance with a clearly discernible sense of craftsmanship.
Historical Context:
Such individual chairs were part of middle-class home decor in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and were frequently used as part of small seating groups, at writing or side tables, or in bedrooms and dressing rooms. The particularly low seat was also intended for dressing and caring for children at the time. Features: The backrest is open-structured with turned slats and crossbars and has a distinctly vertical emphasis. The seat is upholstered and covered with a fabric in a light Toile de Jouy-style pattern.
Design:
The chair’s form bridges the gap between late historicist and rustic-bourgeois furniture styles. Notable features include the turned front legs, the high backrest with its delicate tapering, and the overall slender proportions. The light-colored finish reduces the historical heaviness of the design and makes the structure’s articulation particularly clear.
Function:
In the past, this chair served as a single seat in living rooms or bedrooms, often placed at small tables or dressing tables. Today, it works well as a standalone piece, as an accent chair in a bedroom or dressing room, or as a complementary seat in a serene interior.
