Elevate your space with this exquisite stoneware set from the renowned Sakuma Fujitaro Kiln, one of the most historic and prestigious potteries in Mashiko, Japan. This set features a “Ichirin-zashi” (single flower vase) and a matching “Yunomi” (tea cup), both handcrafted by the current master, Fujiya Sakuma.
The Art of Salt Glaze (En-yu):
These pieces showcase the masterful application of salt glazing—a technique famously refined in Mashiko by Living National Treasure Shoji Hamada. During the high-fire process, salt is introduced into the kiln, creating a mesmerizing, textured surface reminiscent of an orange peel. The deep, earthy browns and subtle grey-green flecks embody the raw, organic beauty of the Mingei (Folk Art) movement.
Artist Heritage:
Fujiya Sakuma is the grandson of the legendary Fujitaro Sakuma, a foundational figure in Mashiko pottery who worked as a contemporary of Shoji Hamada, sharing the same Mashiko tradition. This set is not just functional ware; it is a piece of Japanese ceramic history.
Condition & Provenance:
• Condition: Excellent vintage condition. No chips or cracks.
• Authenticity: Includes the original Tomobako (signed wooden box), hand-inked and stamped by the artist, ensuring its provenance and value.
• Versatility: The vase can also be styled as a “Tokkuri” (sake carafe), making it a versatile addition to a modern or Wabi-sabi inspired interior.
