A magnificent example of "Statement Chinoiserie," this monumental 32-inch porcelain palace vase (34 inches with base) was originally acquired in the 1970s from a premier importer in Los Angeles’ historic Chinatown. It has been held in a single private collection for over 50 years and represents the peak of mid-century Chinese export artistry.
Artistry & Symbolism
The vase features a panoramic landscape of the ""King of Birds"" and the ""King of Flowers."" Two majestic phoenixes—symbols of grace and virtue—soar amidst oversized, hand-painted blooming peonies, representing wealth and prosperity. The vibrant cobalt underglaze is finished with intricate ruyi-head borders at the neck and a traditional petal-lapel band at the foot.
The Custom Base
The vase is accompanied by its original, custom-fitted hardwood stand. This hand-carved base features a traditional five-legged silhouette with a rich, dark-stained rosewood finish. It is specially recessed to securely hold the 9-inch diameter foot of the vase, providing both stability and an additional 2 inches of height for a gallery-ready presentation.

Porcelain & Glaze: The vase is structurally sound with no chips, cracks, or restorations. The upper body is vibrant with a glossy glaze and sharp cobalt. There is an area of subtle, aged-related yellowish discoloration visible on the porcelain glaze in the lower quadrant of the vase's body. This is a common firing or environmental patina effect for export ware of this era. It does not affect the integrity of the piece or the beauty of the hand-painting. Natural firing pinholes and minor surface pitting are present, consistent with authentic porcelain production. Markings: Characteristic of high-quality export wares of this era, the underside is unmarked, showing the clean, oxidized clay body of the foot rim. Base: The carved wood stand is structurally sound and sturdy. The wood shows a lovely authentic patina with some minor surface scuffing and finish wear consistent with 50 years of display. less
