A very large handmade Bahamian basket created by the well known Plait Lady, Omelia Marshall who died at the age of 97. She lived on the island of Andros , a decendent of the Black Seminloles , a group of Seminole Indians and runaway slaves who fled from Florida in the early 1900's. She served as a mid-wife, farmer, bush doctor and mentor throughout the island. Her unique weaving technique is said to fuse Seminole and Congolese styles. She had 14 children and is a legend in the Bahamas and beyond.
The basket is 23" in diameter and is useful for shells, magazines, flowers, yarn and many other things. Made from native straw.
