The vase is a splendid example of atmospheric perspective applied to glass. The scene depicts a bare forest under a blanket of snow, bathed in a warm and vibrant twilight.
The techniques employed are multiple and masterfully layered:
- Vitrification Background: The background is created by heating with yellow and orange glass powders for the sky, while inclusions of white and gray powders realistically imitate the grainy texture of snow on the ground.
- Cameo Acid Etching: The tree trunks in the foreground have been chemically carved into the upper layer of glass to achieve a sculptural relief that gives depth to the scene.
- Grisaille Enamel Decoration: The slender branches and the distant woods are finely painted with brown-black enamel, creating a mist-like, distant effect typical of Japanese prints of the time.
- Frosted Finish: The surface has been treated to achieve a satin finish that enhances the sensation of winter's cold and diffused light.
- Maker: Daum Nancy (signed under the base or on the side with the Cross of Lorraine, enameled in black).
- Period: Circa 1905-1910.
- Material: Multilayered glass, dust and enamel inclusions.
- Condition: Excellent condition. Glass intact, vivid colors and enamels perfectly preserved.
Signature: The vase bears the original signature "Daum Nancy" with the Cross of Lorraine, finely painted in black enamel under the base. The marking is perfectly consistent with the factory's production in the first decade of the 20th century and guarantees the piece's authenticity.
The "Winter" series is among the most iconic of Daum Nancy's production. This particular piece stands out for the exceptional contrast between the warmth of the "fire" sky and the coldness of the snow, making it a sure investment for any fine glass art collection.
