Pierre jeanneret 057 civil bench, in black lacquered wood and woven cane, by cassina. A bench originally designed by pierre jeanneret around 1955 and reissued in 2020. Manufactured by cassina in italy. As part of its continued exploration of the furnishings created for the city of chandigarh, cassina has introduced the civil bench into the hommage à pierre jeanneret collection. This collection is defined by its pure lines and humble materials, expressing a harmonious meeting between modern european principles and the traditional spirit of india. Originally produced between 1955 and 1956 for the residences and apartments of members of the legislature assembly in the indian city, the bench is composed of three consecutive seating elements, supported by a single front crossbar and two lateral supports arranged in the form of an inverted “v”. The seat features the characteristic woven pattern found throughout the collection, crafted in cassina’s historic carpentry workshop. Optional cushions are also available, offering additional protection and comfort. This piece stands as a tribute to pierre jeanneret, one of the central figures in the creation of chandigarh. His time in india continued until the end of his life in 1967. Through his close and enduring connection with the local context, jeanneret developed a design language that combined essential forms and simple materials, creating a dialogue between european modernism and the traditional indian spirit. The chandigarh project is widely regarded as le corbusier’s most mature work, bringing together his poetics, technical vision, and ideology in a way that reflects his ongoing commitment to research and to contributing meaningfully to the culture of architecture and design. Together, the pair pioneered a new aesthetic vocabulary that placed function and order over embellishment—jeanneret’s work imbuing the strict geometry of modernism with energetic diagonals and lighter materials like cane and wood. A consistent innovator, he collaborated with charlotte perriand on experiments in aluminum and wood, and developed prefabricated housing with jean prouvé. In the early 1950s jeanneret joined his cousin in chandigarh, india, where they embarked on a massive urban-planning project, laying out the city and designing low-cost buildings and furniture. Though corbusier abandoned the project halfway through, jeanneret remained for 15 years as the project’s chief architect. The city remains a masterpiece of the modern vision. About the manufacturer: in a continuing dialogue between past, present, and future, cassina has created the i maestri collection, revisiting furnishing designs by the twentieth century’s best-known architects, including le corbusier, pierre jeanneret, charlotte perriand, charles rennie mackintosh, gerrit thomas rietveld, franco albini, frank lloyd wright and marco zanuso. While the designs and functional concepts have been precisely preserved, the models have been manufactured using evolved technology. This is also the company that has manufactured iconic pieces of contemporary design from the 50’s to the present day, ideated by some of the most important international designers. Today cassina continues to look to the future of design with audacious, passionate curiosity and an open, holistic approach. It affirms its exclusive ability to furnish a home’s living and dining spaces completely and iconically with the cassina perspective: a concept, a philosophy, an informed, futuristic thought. A detailed, expansive horizon of combinations; when placed together, the products have an innovative soul and the modern icons create authentic, welcoming, personal atmospheres involved in a conversation dominated by a code of design excellence, formal sensitive awareness, solidity and cultural authority.
