Outstanding antique carved icon panel. This piece has all the hallmarks of early 19thC examples and may even be older. Maker and country of origin not known, but possibly hailing from Russia, Greece or Spain.
This panel is crafted from a single piece of wood, carved in relief and featuring a Byzantine, Hodegetria type of Madonna and child. The icon is accented by the rope inner border and corner cherub faces and wings. The paint appears to be egg tempera, which is highlighted by gold leaf, both very typical trademark materials of these panels. Absolutely jewel-like.
Measures 7.75"x 1.25"x 9.5". Condition is as seen with age/handling and storage related flaking and losses. Not apparently marked or dated.
