Japanese silk scroll painting of a Beautiful Woman wearing traditional Japanese kimono, by Gyokukajo. Signed by the artist: “Gyokukajo” (玉華女), and sealed: “Gyokuka” (玉華).
玉 (Gyoku) means “jade,” symbolizing beauty and purity.
華 (Ka) means “flower” or “splendor.”
女 (Jo) means “woman.”
By the manner of the artist and choice of colors we can assume it was created by a female artist. Gouache, watercolor and ink on silk. Mounted on fabric, silk upper and lower liners. Bone roller ends. Paper on back. Comes in the original wooden case. Japan, Taisho to early Showa Era, c. 1912-1940s. Very Good condition - minor age wear overall, minor foxing and staining, clean. This scroll can be trimmed and framed.
