Antique Chinese soapstone carving of an Immortal. Republic period or earlier. Figural Shou Lao is one of the three "Star Gods" (Sanxing), specifically the star of longevity. He is traditionally portrayed as a benevolent old man with a very high, bulbous forehead, which signifies his great age and wisdom.
The sculpture includes traditional symbols associated with a long and healthy life:
- A Staff: Often carried by Shou Lao to represent dignity and his status as a venerable elder.
- Attendant Child: He is frequently depicted with a child, symbolizing a long and abundant life shared across generations.
- Deer: A sacred animal often shown by his side as an additional symbol of longevity.
