A rare and complete vintage Woodard wrought iron garden suite in the ivy leaf and vine pattern, comprising a three-seat settee, one lounge armchair, one cantilever spring lounge chair, and four glass-top side tables — two larger end tables and two smaller nesting tables.
Founded in Owosso, Michigan in 1866, the Woodard Furniture Company became the preeminent American manufacturer of wrought iron garden and patio furniture, rivaled only by John B. Salterini of New York. Woodard's hand-wrought iron suites were sold through premium retailers and featured in the finest homes of the mid-twentieth century. Complete original suites in unrestored condition are increasingly scarce, as most surviving examples have been repainted, parted out, or had their cushions replaced.
Acquired from a Westchester County Tudor estate, this suite retains its original brown patina finish with no repainting — an increasingly rare find in the vintage wrought iron market, where most pieces have been stripped and repowdercoated. The hand-wrought iron throughout shows the quality construction and precise decorative vocabulary Woodard was celebrated for: a three-lobed ivy leaf flanking a double-loop vine motif on the arms and stretchers, arched leg supports with a distinctive pointed break, and raised disc feet designed to prevent ground contact and rust — a considered detail that speaks to the maker's attention to longevity.
The cushions are custom upholstered in a subtle woodgrain Sunbrella textile, no staining. Glass tops on all four tables are intact and clear.
