Rare Antique White Ironstone Pitcher with 36-Star American Flag, John Maddock & Son, Circa 1864
John Maddock & Son, Burslem, Stoke on Trent, 1855-1870
An extraordinarily rare and historically significant piece of Anglo-American ceramics, this striking white ironstone pitcher by the renowned English manufacturer John Maddock & Son features a hand-painted overglaze 36-star American flag — precisely dating it to 1864, the year Nevada was admitted to the Union and the star count briefly reached 36. A pitcher that captures a singular moment in American history during the height of the Civil War era.
John Maddock & Son, operating out of Burslem in Staffordshire, England, were celebrated producers of fine ironstone china and were well known for manufacturing wares specifically destined for the American market. This pitcher is a testament to that transatlantic trade relationship, combining British craftsmanship with vivid American patriotic imagery rendered in overglaze painted decoration.
The crisp white ironstone body provides a perfect canvas for the colorful flag motif, and is substantial and well-proportioned, measuring 9½ inches tall with a generous 5¾-inch midsection and a 9-inch handle-to-spout spread. The condition is good with only minor wear consistent with its 160-plus years — a remarkable state of preservation for a piece of this age and significance.
Light wear to the gold tint paint on the top spout.
