This element serves a dual purpose: its upper surface forms a convenient secondary tier, while the lower portion acts as a stable foundation for the entire structure, ensuring both strength and durability. The table was crafted between 1890 and 1895 in Cantù, in the province of Como, one of Lombardy’s most important centers for high-quality artisanal furniture production. This region is renowned for its long-standing cabinetmaking tradition, where master craftsmen create bespoke and luxury furnishings for a discerning clientele, including private collectors as well as high-end interior design projects for hotels, restaurants, and prestigious residences worldwide. The artisans conceived this piece with the intention of creating a compact yet visually striking object, defined by clean, purposeful lines. The result is a design that balances restraint and refinement, lending the table a timeless elegance and a distinctive, sophisticated character. The entire structure is made of walnut and is enriched with an exquisite walnut burl veneer of exceptional decorative appeal. The surface has been finished using traditional handcraft techniques—careful sanding, varnishing, and polishing—which enhance the depth of color, the natural figuring, and the intricate grain patterns of the wood. The top, in particular, displays a captivating visual richness and remarkable material depth. Walnut burl, sourced from the root of the tree, is characterized by its dense, irregular, and intricately twisted grain. Each veneer sheet presents one-of-a-kind patterns, making it especially prized in fine furniture making. Veneering is a traditional woodworking technique in which thin slices of fine wood are applied to a solid wood substrate. In this case, carefully selected walnut burl sheets—typically between 1 and 2 millimeters thick—have been expertly laid over a walnut structure, allowing the natural beauty of the material to be fully expressed. This process enhances the chromatic contrasts and dynamic movement of the grain, playing a key role in defining the table’s distinctive character.
