It was crafted in recent years by an elderly master cabinetmaker whose workshop is located in San Frediano, one of Florence’s most vibrant and creative districts, celebrated for its historic artisan workshops where traditional craftsmanship is still practiced by hand. The artisan incorporated four luminous mirrors, cut flush and inserted along the flat inner sides of the frame, slightly angled inward. This refined construction creates a striking optical effect that enhances the brightness of the composition while lending the piece an elegant and sophisticated presence. The artwork is mounted within the frame using a refined cream-colored mat, accented with a thin black border that elegantly defines the composition. The drawing itself is an abstract work executed on special paper using a mixed technique combining watercolor, diluted tempera, and ink. The composition clearly belongs to the abstract and expressionist tendencies that characterized much of the European avant-garde during the early 1960s. The work bears a signature (illegible) and is dated 1966. The composition stands out for its dynamic interplay of graphic marks and transparent color washes, developed in tones of blue, oxide red, ochre, and black, forming a layered visual structure of remarkable expressive intensity. The pictorial language recalls the European aesthetic—particularly French and Italian—of Art Informel (gestural abstraction) and Tachisme, movements that developed between the 1950s and the 1960s, with clear affinities to the gestural experiments of artists such as Emilio Scanavino and Georges Mathieu. This artistic language emphasizes improvisational gesture and the expressive use of material, while also showing certain parallels with American Abstract Expressionism—as seen in the work of artists like Franz Kline or Robert Motherwell—though maintaining a more lyrical and introspective sensibility. Particularly noteworthy is the type of paper used: thick and compact, with a pronounced texture and a slightly rigid feel. This tactile surface contributes significantly to the expressive strength of the composition. The framed artwork constitutes a unique piece, combining historical interest with strong decorative appeal, capable of adding character and sophistication to a wide variety of interiors. The piece remains in good condition, with light signs of age consistent with time. Dimensions: width 59 cm (23.23 in.); height 72 cm (28.35 in.); depth 5 cm (1.97 in.).
