HUGO NIÑO (Biography): Born in Bogotá in 1947, Hugo Niño is a literary scholar and linguist. He served as a schoolteacher in indigenous communities in the Amazon region. Since that time, he has returned constantly to these indigenous communities; through his immersion in their daily lives, he has come to grasp the very essence of their mythological storytelling.
He has served as a university professor of Latin American literature and in his work as a cultural researcher, he has significantly advanced the field of ethnoliterary studies, focusing his scholarly attention specifically on indigenous literature. His primary territory for field research has been the Amazon. In this capacity, he has produced works of such significance as *Literatura de Colombia aborigen* (Literature of Indigenous Colombia), published in 1978—a volume that stands as the first comprehensive, systematic study of its kind in Latin America.
Among his creative works—which remain inextricably linked to major indigenous mythological themes—several titles stand out: *Primitivos relatos contados otra vez* (Primitive Tales Retold), winner of the Casa de las Américas Prize in 1976; *Rodapalabra* (Word-Wheel), 1993; *Mitos del sol* (Myths of the Sun), 1994; and *La historia de Gitoma* (The Story of Gitoma), his most recent book.
Literary critic Carlos Rincón has observed that, with *Primitivos relatos contados otra vez*, the history of Colombian literature effectively splits in two; he argues that the work represents a completely unexpected type of text, one that establishes a new mode of narration in which the story being told engages in a process of self-reflection. Furthermore, *Rodapalabra* has been recognized as a seminal work within the realm of Spanish-language children's and young adult literature, earning a featured entry in the *Vademécum* (Guidebook) published by Fundalectura.
The story selected for inclusion in this *Anthology of the Best Children's Stories* was drawn from the book *Mitos del Sol* (Myths of the Sun)—featuring engravings by Dioscórides Pérez—which was published by the Banco de Colombia in 1993.
Dioscorides Pérez Pereira (Biography): Born in Pereira, Risaralda in 1950, he studied at the Society of Friends of Art, the Institute of Fine Arts at the Technological University, and the National University. He completed his postgraduate studies at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in China. Since 1978, he has served as a Full Professor at the School of Visual Arts at the National University. His body of work—encompassing drawing, printmaking, performance art, and writing—has garnered numerous awards and honorable mentions, including First Prize at the San Juan Printmaking Biennial (Puerto Rico); First Prize for Drawing at the Q.C.C. Art Gallery in New York; First Prize for Performance Art at the *Ciudad de Bogotá* Awards; and First Prize for Chronicle Writing from *Revista Número*. He has published four books. His printmaking and drawing works have been featured in hundreds of group and solo exhibitions—including major art salons—held in galleries and museums throughout Colombia and abroad.
