This is a … Read more Beautiful large Japanese silk scroll painting "Leaping Carp" (Koi Fish). Signed and sealed by artist. Very detailed. This is a classic motif in Japanese art symbolizing perseverance, success, and professional advancement. It is based on the legend that a carp that swims upstream and leaps over the 'Dragon Gate' will transform into a dragon. It is a beautiful example of Nihonga (traditional Japanese-style painting), often displayed to bring good fortune and courage to a household. Ink and watercolor on silk. Beautifully mounted on silk. Bone style roller ends. Paper on back. Japan, early Showa Era, c. 1930-1940s. Very Good to Good condition of the painting - some age wear and foxing, a water damage stain on the upper part of the painting can be covered with the silk border being brought lower, as we show it on one of the images; the silk mount has water damage and can be trimmed off before framing. This scroll painting is ready to be trimmed and framed.
