It was looking a little dull and dirty, so it was detail cleaned, stained, and varnished. The original worn paint was left alone as it adds to the authentic appearance. Every metal piece has been coated with clear enamel to keep it in the state it's in and to brighten it up some. This extensive cleaning and preservation of the wood and cast iron left this piece looking very nice overall. Top to bottom details: The wood deck shows wear, but it is free of any damage such as cracks or warping, and every board is solid. There is no deterioration from moisture on this surface or anywhere else on the cart, as it has spent its entire existence indoors. The corner stake brackets are fine with no corrosion present, and the vertical sides look excellent, but one has a crack that has been repaired. This spot is now secure, and it is barely visible. The cast iron axle mounting brackets on both sides are also fine, with no damage, excessive wear, or corrosion to be found. The underside of the piece is very good but has not been refinished. The axle looks to be fine, and the two cast iron center wheels are in the same shape as the rest: damage free with no corrosion. One of the center wheel's hard rubber tires has an approximately 1" gouge missing on the interior side, and the other has a slight cut mark on the outside. These wheels rotate as they should. The two end caster wheels have very good cast iron and tires with some wear around the edges. These wheels both rotate and swivel properly, and the bearings are completely rust free. To be able to ship this for free, the wheels, axle, and corner brackets will be removed. This is where we ran into just about the only issue with the cart. It should have been an easy, quick procedure to remove these parts, but some of the nuts were attached so tightly to the bolts that some damage was done to them during their removal. There are new nuts and bolts for the axle mount and corner stake brackets. They are the same style as the old ones. Since this was done after the fact, there is no picture showing them installed, but there is one showing a new set beside an original one.
