The hand-painted design radiates outward from a central cartouche — a classic flower basket motif featuring chrysanthemums, camellia, and dark blue foliage rendered in the iconic Imari palette of deep cobalt, iron red, forest green, and gilded gold.
The border is divided into alternating fan-shaped panels, each filled with intricate geometric latticework (kikko and shippo patterns), prunus blossoms, chrysanthemums, and rolling cloud scrolls — patterns deeply rooted in Japanese decorative tradition. The scalloped rim echoes the lobed edges of chrysanthemum petals, a form associated with Imperial symbolism in Japan.
The reverse is clean glazed white with a red ring and a blue rectangular maker’s mark with Japanese characters reading “Made in Japan” — consistent with mid-to-late 20th century export porcelain produced in the Arita / Imari region of Kyushu.
