Monumental Pair Japanese Meiji Period Bronze Floor Vases – Koi, Lotus & Lily Pads – 36” Baluster Form
Description:
An exceptional and monumental pair of antique Japanese bronze floor vases dating to the Meiji Period (1868–1912), showcasing the remarkable craftsmanship and artistic sophistication of late 19th-century Japan.
These extra-large baluster-form vases feature elegantly flared and subtly fluted necks, tapering into broad, stable bases. Each is richly decorated in high relief with finely detailed aquatic scenes—graceful koi swimming among lotus blossoms, lily pads, and flowing water plants. The composition is dynamic yet balanced, a hallmark of masterful Meiji-era metalwork.
The surfaces exhibit a beautifully aged, warm brown bronze patina with natural verdigris highlights, particularly visible within recessed details, enhancing depth and authenticity. The rims are adorned with a ruyi-head (lingzhi) border, while the bases feature a crisp Greek key (meander) pattern, grounding the organic motifs with classical structure.
Substantial in both scale and weight, these vases make a powerful visual statement and are ideal for anchoring grand interiors—perfect flanking an entryway, fireplace, or placed beside a console or architectural element.
The central scenes depict gracefully swimming koi fish among lotus blossoms, lily pads, and aquatic foliage—timeless motifs in Japanese art symbolizing prosperity, perseverance, and harmony with nature.
