Contemporary seriolithograph in color on paper by Neil J. Farkas titled James Dean. Signed in the plate. Printed on paper.
The composition reinterprets the portrait of James Dean through a photo mosaic construction, where the image is formed from thousands of small photographic fragments. From a distance, the portrait reads as a cohesive image of the actor, while up close it resolves into a dense grid of miniature photographs including cultural imagery, textures, figures, and urban scenes.
The work reflects Pop Art influenced image appropriation strategies associated with Andy Warhol, particularly in its use of iconic celebrity portraiture and repetition. Its mosaic structure also relates to photographic collage and portrait construction techniques seen in the work of David Hockney and Chuck Close, where larger images are built from smaller visual units.
The layered photographic system creates a dual viewing experience between the iconic portrait of James Dean and the underlying network of images that construct the surface.
