A striking pair of sculptural bentwood room dividers designed by Ludvík Volák and produced by Dřevopodnik Holešov in the 1960s, representing one of the most expressive applications of bent plywood in post-war Czechoslovak design. Refined version featuring fully rounded edge profiles and complete top and bottom fixing elements.
Defined by an intricate system of continuous, flowing bentwood frames, these dividers dissolve the boundary between furniture and architecture. The composition of interlocking rectangular loops creates a rhythmic geometric grid that functions simultaneously as open shelving, spatial partition, and visual statement.
Volák’s work builds on the Central European tradition of bentwood innovation, yet moves beyond functionalism into a more organic, almost sculptural modernism. The softened radii and seamless transitions between vertical and horizontal elements demonstrate a high level of technical mastery, achievable only through advanced plywood forming techniques of the period.
Unlike rigid partition systems, these dividers maintain transparency and light flow, allowing interiors to remain visually connected while subtly defining space—an approach aligned with progressive modernist interior planning of the 1960s.
This is a true pair, offering strong architectural presence when placed symmetrically, used as a corner configuration, or installed as a freestanding zoning element within an interior.
Both pieces are in good vintage condition, structurally sound. The surfaces have been professionally polished, and the joints reinforced, ensuring stability while preserving the original character and patina of the wood. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
