This early 20th-century mahogany chest of drawers is a fine example of the George III style, a period design noted for its clean lines, high-quality wood, and elegant proportions. The piece features a distinctive serpentine front, where the drawer faces are curved in a subtle wave-like shape, a classic hallmark of mid-18th-century English cabinetry.
The four graduated drawer fronts showcase "figured" or flame mahogany, characterized by a rich, swirling grain pattern that creates a dramatic visual effect. The drawers are adorned with decorative brass swan-neck handles mounted on ornate circular backplates, which are characteristic of 18th-century revival styles.
The canted (angled) corners are decorated with blind fretwork, an ornamental carving that does not go all the way through the wood, typical of Chippendale-inspired designs.
The chest rests on ogee bracket feet, which are s-shaped carved supports that add stability and a sense of weight to the base.
Notable is a brushing slide with small pull rings just below the top surface. It’s a functional feature used by 18th-century gentlemen for laying out clothes or writing. A matching piece may be available to make a pair.
Signature/Maker’s mark: Nonexistent.
