The detailed foreground vegetation, rocky terrain, and layered mountain ridges create a strong sense of depth and atmosphere, while the distant peaks evoke the vastness and isolation of the region during this early period of exploration. This engraving was produced as part of the reports of explorations and surveys, better known as the pacific railroad surveys, commissioned by the u.s. Government to identify practical routes for a transcontinental railroad. These works are among the earliest and most important visual records of the american west prior to large-scale settlement. The view was drawn by f.w. Egloffstein, a leading topographical artist of the expedition, and engraved by c. Schumann. It was printed by selmar siebert in washington d.c. And issued around 1860–1861.
