The composition captures a quiet yet monumental moment in the western frontier, with a small group of riders crossing the valley floor, dwarfed by steep canyon walls and rugged mountain formations. Drawn from nature on april 5th at 2 p.m., from an island in the weber river in the valley of the great salt lake, this scene combines topographical accuracy with a romantic vision of the american west. The detailed foreground vegetation, rocky terrain, and layered mountain ridges create a strong sense of depth and atmosphere, while the distant peaks evoke the vastness and isolation of the region during this early period of exploration. This engraving was produced as part of the reports of explorations and surveys, better known as the pacific railroad surveys, commissioned by the u.s. Government to identify practical routes for a transcontinental railroad. These works are among the earliest and most important visual records of the american west prior to large-scale settlement. The view was drawn by f.w. Egloffstein, a leading topographical artist of the expedition, and engraved by c. Schumann. It was printed by selmar siebert in washington d.c. And issued around 1860–1861. Today, these prints are highly collectible for their historical significance, fine engraving technique, and strong decorative appeal. This example is an original antique engraving. It is not a modern reproduction. Any images showing the print framed are for visual inspiration only. The print is supplied unframed. Condition report: good condition with age-related toning and light spotting, mainly in the margins. Small binding holes visible in the lower border. Image remains clean with strong detail. Plate mark visible. Framing tips: best presented with a wide museum mount in warm ivory tones and a dark walnut or ebonized frame to enhance contrast and depth. For a lighter, contemporary look, a natural wood frame with a generous mat creates an elegant and balanced presentation.
