A pair from Baker’s Historic Charleston collection—Chippendale in form, lattice in theory, and entirely too self-possessed to behave like “just chairs.”

Finished in oxblood lacquer that refuses to choose between mahogany and red and instead simply exists as both, depending on the light and your willingness to notice. It has that quiet, slightly theatrical depth that makes everything around it look like it was underdressed.

The lattice backs do what good architecture should: provide structure, restraint, and the subtle suggestion that everything else in the room should probably try a little harder. The seats are custom upholstered in a tailored woven stripe—dusty blue slate and soft taupe—an intelligent, edited counterpoint. It doesn’t compete with the lacquer; it behaves like it was hired to keep it grounded.

They work as dining end chairs, occasional seating, or as a pair of well-dressed punctuation marks in a room that already thinks it has taste. Which, to be fair, it probably does—but these still improve it, in the way good lighting improves most faces: technically optional, practically undeniable.
