When it's a large party - over 12 or 14, I typically will use matching black padded folding chairs and use the dining room chairs as extra guest seating throughout the house. In this manner the table can handle 16 (with 2 on one end). If you add the 2 to the other end - seats 18. I typically don't add both ends so that guests can walk around the table to go into the kitchen.
