This minimalist dove sculpture is by American sculptor Cleo Hartwig, dating from the 1960s. It’s a streamlined foundry-stone bird (sometimes called Marblite) mounted on a black base. The signature (C. Hartwig Sc.) pressed into the mold denotes an early production run, considered higher quality and more original than later reproductions. It was part of her “Peace Dove” series, created for her company Sculptor Collectors.
Cleo Hartwig (1907–1988) was an influential American sculptor in the New York School, known for direct-carve methods in stone, wood, and plaster. Her abstract animal forms appeal for their quiet presence and sculptural clarity. Her works are now included in major collections like the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
The minimalist form, neutral colors, and high quality of this art makes it adaptable to any style. It would be a sophisticated addition to any interior. It is in very good vintage condition with no cracks, chips, or significant blemishes. There are a few small marks underneath the tail (see photos). The base has a slight wiggle in the horizontal plane, but the sculpture seems to be firmly attached.
