Here is a rare opportunity to own a collection of four artworks by American sculptor Richard Notkin: Cube Skull with Brain; Cube Skull Left Profile; Ear #1, and Brain. A large collection of these tiles form a mosaic titled "The Gift," which is in the permanent collection of the Portland Art Museum. Each tile measures 2.75", and the four are mounted together on a board. "199[1?]" can be seen at the edge of one tile on the reverse. The assemblage was not disturbed, so the exact date and presence of a signature are unknown.
Richard Notkin (b. 1948) studied under Ken Ferguson at the Kansas City Art Institute and went on to earn his MFA at the University of California Davis, where he was influenced by Robert Arneson and the California Funk movement. His work is represented in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Nelson Atkins (Kansas City) Museum of Fine Art . He is particularly known for his politically charged ceramic teapots and sculptural tiles, which blend social commentary with technical virtuosity.
