This intimate sculptural object embodies the deeply rooted cultural traditions of the Mossi people, where such figures served as both cherished companions and powerful symbols of fertility and womanhood. Traditionally given to young girls, these dolls were carried, nurtured, and cared for as real infants - an essential practice intended to instill maternal responsibilities. Carved from a single block of wood, this example features a beautifully worn surface with incised geometric detailing suggestive of scarification, a domed coiffure form, and a band of bead adornment likely added over time by its owner. The visible patina, handling wear, and natural age cracking speak to its life in use, reinforcing its role not merely as a toy, but as a personal and symbolic object tied to rites of passage, protection, and the continuity of life within Mossi society.
