These plates beautifully illustrate the relationship between insects and their host plants, combining botanical accuracy with careful observation of insect life cycles. The left plate depicts insects associated with hazel (Corylus avellana), including a vividly colored caterpillar feeding among the leaves and developing nuts, alongside adult moths and pupae. The composition highlights the full metamorphosis process, from larva to chrysalis to winged insect. The right plate presents insects on elm (Ulmus) and possibly related hedgerow plants, again showing caterpillars, pupae, and delicate moths arranged in a balanced and instructive layout. The insects illustrated are typical of British woodland and hedgerow environments and likely include early depictions of species now classified among tiger moths, geometers, and other common English moth families. The soft hand coloring, with natural greens and subtle accents of yellow and pink, enhances both the scientific clarity and decorative appeal. Each plate carries a period dedication, reflecting the patronage system that supported early natural history publications. One is dedicated to James Brydges, Duke of Chandos, an important aristocratic patron of the arts, while the other is dedicated to Brook Bridges, Esq., representing the network of subscribers who made such publications possible. Albin’s work is regarded as one of the earliest systematic attempts to document British insects, and these engravings remain highly collectible for their historical significance, fine engraving, and decorative qualities. Their elegant compositions make them equally suitable for collectors of natural history and for refined interior display. This is an original set of 18th-century engravings, not reproductions. All items are authentic period works over 100 years old. The prints are sold unframed; any framed images are shown for presentation and inspiration only. Condition: Good antique condition with age-related toning. Minor edge wear and signs of original binding. Colors remain well preserved. Framing tips: Excellent as a pair in dark walnut or ebonized frames with wide ivory mats for a classic gallery look. For a lighter interior, natural oak frames with museum-white mats create a fresh, contemporary presentation. UV-protective glazing recommended.
