Circa 19th to early 20th century, the piece embodies the enduring aesthetic vocabulary of royal portraiture including elongated neck rings signifying status and spiritual vitality, striated facial scarification marking identity and lineage, and the dignified, frontal gaze associated with idealized rulership. The crown-like headdress evokes authority and connection to the Oba (king), while the hollowed interior suggests a possible function as a commemorative or ritual vessel echoing the ancestral altar heads used in Benin to honor departed rulers.
