Antique 19th-Century Persian Qajar Dynasty Ceramic Tile – Equestrian with Bird of Prey
An authentic 19th-century polychrome glazed ceramic tile from the Qajar Dynasty of Persia. This piece features a rich, hand-painted scene of a rider on horseback, accompanied by a large, sweeping bird of prey—likely a falcon or hawk—rendered with dramatic tail feathers that frame the top of the composition.
Unlike many tiles of this era with white backgrounds, this example features a deep cobalt blue ground that makes the central equestrian figure and the bird's golden-yellow plumage pop. The rider is depicted in traditional attire with a green cap and tunic, accented by earthy ochre and manganese purple glazes. The tile is characterized by the slightly raised, molded relief typical of Qajar architectural ceramics.

There is a small, stable hairline fracture at the top center edge, extending slightly into the bird's wing. • Perimeter: The edges and corners show typical nibbles and small chips where the underlying buff-colored earthenware is exposed, consistent with being removed from an original architectural installation. • Reverse: The back is unglazed and displays a dark, textured patina with remnants of original mortar and mineral buildup from its historical placement. • Stability: The tile is solid and heavy, with no significant structural repairs or restoration. less
