This is one of the most outstanding of his many "variation" pictures - works executed with a famous painting in mind. (Delacroix's Algerian Women was followed in 1957 by Velasquez's Menines). Picasso seems to dissect, paraphrase and adopt, as though he somehow needed to attain inner repose through the creation of these dazzling, paradoxical stylistic exercises -- his own effective contributions to the undisputed masterpieces which he openly and passionately admired.
