Classic Taoist and Confucian motifs come together here, focusing on a reclusive life theme within the mountain setting. The human figures represent ancient scholars or sages, symbolizing wisdom and the pursuit of a tranquil life. The stylized, circular foliage belongs to a pine tree, a powerful Chinese symbol for longevity, endurance, and steadfastness. In the detailed carving on the very top, a flow of water collects flowers and then spills down the mountain into a place behind the tree. Utilizing such deep relief carving, creating depth and shadows within the "grotto," the unknown artisan made the small scene feel expansive.
Made of jadeite and highly polished on the exterior, the stone's natural brown "skin" works as an outer frame, underscoring the material's authenticity.
