In 1909 Picasso was no longer just "a dabbler in paints from Bateau-Lavoir" whom critics and collectors could well afford to ignore, since by then Vollard had bought enough of his canvases to enable him to move into an apartment in the Boulevard de Clichy with Fernande Olivier. There he lived during his first period of analytical cubism, in which style he painted several portraits, this being the first. Roland Penrose has rightly pointed out that "the contrasting greens and red-browns belong to the Provencal landscape of the painter from Aix". Later he abandoned the vibrant greens and blues but, as in his portrait of Vollard, accentuated the dissolution of perspective required by the dictates of analysis.
