This is a truly striking example of a Gothic Revival telephone stand, attributed to the circle of Oscar Bach or Bertram Segar, and likely originating from Greenwich Village around 1920. During this period, artists and metalworkers in New York were producing highly decorative, hand-wrought pieces that blended medieval inspiration with early 20th-century design sensibilities. This stand reflects that movement beautifully, combining function with an unmistakable sense of artistry and presence.
The craftsmanship here is exceptional, with a rich interplay of cast iron and brass elements. The upper cabinet features intricate Gothic tracery with scrolling vine motifs and a dark contrasting ground, while the crest above showcases heraldic imagery with finely detailed figures. The slender iron base has an elegant, almost architectural quality, with delicate curves and a pierced stretcher that reinforces the Gothic theme. Every surface offers something to discover, and the combination of materials gives the piece both visual depth and a sense of durability. The stand likely originally had a marble top, which is no longer present, but the form still presents beautifully as-is.
It is in nice antique condition, showing expected wear consistent with age and use, including surface wear and patina to the metal surfaces that enhance its character. The cabinet remains functional and would have originally housed a telephone, but today it works just as well as a decorative stand or small storage piece. This is a wonderful example of early 20th-century artistic metalwork that brings both history and a bold decorative statement into a space.
